Facts about Handmade
Lye Soap
Whether you are looking for a gentle unscented basic soap, a heavily
infused scented soap with ground herbs, bar or liquid soap, all of our
soaps are crafted with the utmost care in preserving the integrity of
the oils and ingredients used.
- Botanical Earth® soaps
contain naturally sourced organic ingredients. None of our
soaps contain animal fats or vegetable shortening (excluding laundry
soap - it contains hydrogenated soybean oil). Our soybean oil contains no GMO's (genetically modified organism). You
will find ingredients listed for most of our soaps so you know ahead of
time what exactly is in it. Please feel free to ask if it's
ingredients are not yet listed.
- We mostly make
"Super-fatted" soaps which contain a very high percentage of
unincorporated oils. This will leave a more emollient and gentle soap,
BUT, it may dissolve quicker and have a shorter shelf life. You may find
some of our bar soaps to be softer than others. If the soap
has a high degree of extra moisturizing oils, and a limited shelf life
(hemp in particular), what is the point of having a rock hard bar of
soap that lasts forever? Our soaps are meant to be used, not left on
display. You need to use some form of soap dish for our soaps in order
for them to dry between uses.
- All of our
scents are created using essential oils. Fragrance oils are synthetic
reproductions of nature which may contain essential oil in the
makeup. Botanical Earth® only offers 100% essential oil blends. Is
one better than the other? There are arguments both positive and
negative for the use of synthetic fragrance oils. I have made the
decision that Botanical Earth® products will not contain fragrance oils at this
time. We do offer a variety of fragrant
body care products at our sister store,
MoSoap, but Botanical Earth
products will not contain synthetic fragrances.
- All of our bar soaps are made from wooden or enameled soap
molds. We do not use PVC molds for any of our soaps.
I have chosen not to use PVC molds for Botanical Earth soaps due to
environmental reasons.
- Most all of our recipes are
original and designed by the owner of Botanical Earth. I am a
third generation professional soap maker having learned the art at my
grandmother's soap making /herbal business in the mid 1970's.
Making my first batch of herbal soap at age 8 (that works out to be over
30 years of soap making experience currently), I recreate historic
and vintage recipes along with client suggestions and personal favorites
for Botanical Earth and several other body care businesses.

also makes laundry and kitchen soaps which can be found in our Herbal Home section. If you are using natural care body products,
why wash sheets and towels in detergents or synthetic fragrance washing
powders?
